Standing in the middle of the aisle, scanning the rows upon rows of basketballs can be daunting for anyone, but especially for parents who are more familiar with footballs, soccer balls or hockey pucks! Our guide will help you avoid some common mistakes and hopefully, prevent you from amassing a collection of ‘not quite right’ basketballs in the garage!
Things to Consider –
Indoor vs. Outdoor Use
Indoor basketballs are typically made of leather or composite leather for good grip and feel on wooden courts. These are more expensive. They will wear down quickly outdoors and are best kept for in the gym.
Outdoor basketballs, usually made of rubber or synthetic materials are a more cost effective option. They are designed for durability on rough surfaces like asphalt, concrete, or the pavement on the way to school!
Indoor/Outdoor (Composite): These basketballs offer versatility for both indoor and outdoor play. If your child plays in both environments, a composite ball provides a balance of durability and grip.
Age and Gender
- Size 5 (27.5 inches, 17 oz): Suitable for boys and girls aged 4-9. This size helps players transition to a bigger ball without overwhelming their developing skills.
- Size 6 (28.5 inches, 20 oz): This ball is recommended for boys aged 10-12 and girls aged 10 and older. It is also the standard size for female players aged 12-18, as well as in women’s basketball leagues, including Ontario high school and college leagues.
- Size 7 (29.5 inches, 22 oz): The official size for male players aged 13 and up, including high school, college, and professional levels. This ball is used in Ontario’s boys’ basketball leagues from age 13 onwards and is standard for men’s play globally.
By purchasing the correct basketball size and type for your child’s age and playing environment, you will help them develop their skills more effectively and enjoy the game to the fullest. Happy shopping, and we look forward to seeing you at the gym!
